CHAPTER 23

JB was the first to recover. She bent down to her grandfather, who had slumped to the floor again.

“Are you okay?” she asked.

He nodded, then pulled her head down. “This looks very bad,” he whispered. “That was not the Dave we know, what I saw was something very evil. He has some force in him. We need to figure out a way to deal with it somehow, but in the meantime use your skills to calm everyone down, reassure them with some story.”

Rosie was looking down at the body on the floor. “What the hell, where did he suddenly come from?” He looked at JB. “What was all that yelling? Is he all right? How about you guys?”

“We’re fine,” said JB. She looked around at the crowd and raised her hands. “Calm down folks. Dave walked in, looking really tired again, and then yelled something. We rushed to help him but he just crumpled. As for the lights—I think it was some kind of compressor overload—can you smell the ozone in the air?”

The others looked at her and nodded. She could almost feel the tension fading away.

“My grandfather’s all right too, I think he just stood up too quickly. He needs to learn to slow down a bit.” She avoided her grandfather’s eye, as she was sure he’d be scowling at her.

“Let me check Dave.” She knelt down by Dave and laid a finger on his neck. She tried to reach –very cautiously—for traces of whatever had driven him to that rage, but found nothing. “Pulse seems fine. I’m guessing he skipped breakfast again. Rosie, can you call the mill clinic?”

“Good idea,” said Reese. “I think the doctor’s in town today, get him over here. I’ll call Sheila at the detachment office, tell her Dave just felt weak for a bit, nothing major, and that he’ll be at the clinic for a checkup. Don’t worry folks, he’ll be fine.”

“Are you sure he’s okay?” said Rosie.

JB looked over at Junior, who nodded at her. “Yes, he is,” she said. “I know he’s been stretched pretty thin lately, I guess it just caught up with him.”

Dave regained consciousness just as they reached the clinic, but the doctor insisted on booking him in anyway. After checking his vitals, the doctor gave him a mild sedative, put him on a glucose drip, and shooed everyone out. The doctor’s diagnosis was fatigue and low blood sugar, his recommendation was to get some rest and eat better. He didn’t seem very concerned, but Dave certainly was. What was happening to him? He remembered a lot of anger when JB and the others had challenged him, then some kind of battle, then pain and darkness. The pain was still here, right behind his eyes. These headaches could be serious too. Maybe he needed a brain scan or something. He’d been using his one skill, his superpower, yet JB and her family had looked right at him. What was wrong with his fade—why had it changed? Maybe he just had to learn how to manage it better, to control those rages.
